During a company gathering at the Polish Hall on May 25, 2023, members of Company 1 from the Jamesport Volunteer Fire Department sprang into action to save a man's life who was found in a state of distress caused by a food obstruction in his airway.
Upon noticing the individual's distress, several members from Engine 1, quickly responded to the situation. They promptly initiated the Heimlich maneuver in an effort to dislodge the obstruction. Despite their initial attempts, the team was unable to safely extract a large piece of food lodged in the individual's throat.
In the interim, the victim lost consciousness and displayed no pulse. At this critical juncture, our dedicated members of the Jamesport Volunteer Fire Department switched gears to perform high-quality CPR, maintaining these life-saving efforts until the arrival of the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps (RVAC).
Upon their arrival, the RVAC personnel were able to manually clear the victim's airway. By the time the individual was transported to the ambulance, he had regained consciousness and was able to communicate again, marking a successful end to what could have been a tragic event.
The Jamesport Volunteer Fire Department is incredibly proud of our member’s quick thinking, professional training, and the exemplary execution of their duties in such a critical situation. We also extend our gratitude to the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps for their crucial role in this joint life-saving effort.
